Basic goods like coffee, chocolate, cold cuts, and olive oil got cheaper.

The biggest savings were at Lidl, Netto, 365discount, and Rema 1000.

Online supermarket Nemlig.com also cut prices for nearly 400 products.

Madprisluppen manager Lars Smidt said cheap grocery baskets got even cheaper.

The gap between cheap and expensive stores grew to 27 percent.

Lidl and Rema 1000 currently offer the cheapest grocery baskets.

Lidl started its permanent low-price program back in May.

Peer Sandtner from Lidl Denmark said over 300 items have permanent low prices.

Other chains like Netto and 365discount quickly matched those cuts.

A survey by Norstat showed 70 percent of consumers know about permanent low prices.

More than half prefer steady low prices over temporary weekly deals.

However, future food prices remain uncertain.

Lars Smidt warned that rising oil and gasoline costs could push prices back up.
