Danish Discount Supermarkets Cut Prices on Basic Staples in September

Grocery shopping in Copenhagen became cheaper in September. Discount supermarkets across Denmark reduced prices on basic staple foods. Items like cold cuts, coffee, chocolate, and olive oil dropped in price. This trend helps students, workers, and families lower their daily living costs.

A monthly analysis by food price monitoring service Madprisluppen tracked these lower shelf prices. Price cuts were most noticeable at discount chains Lidl, 365discount, Rema 1000, and Netto. Online supermarket Nemlig.com also reduced prices on nearly 400 items to match Rema 1000.

Madprisluppen commercial manager Lars Smidt said the cheapest food baskets became even cheaper. Consumers now pay 27 percent more for the most expensive shopping basket. The cheapest baskets are available at Lidl and Rema 1000.

Lidl started its permanent low-price program back in May. Rema 1000, Netto, and 365discount soon followed this low-price trend. Lidl Denmark purchasing director Peer Sandtner noted over 300 products have permanent low prices.

A Norstat survey for Lidl showed seven in ten Danes know this concept. More than half of shoppers prefer permanent low prices over temporary sales. However, Smidt warned that rising oil and gasoline prices might affect future food costs. This story was originally reported by the Copenhagen Post.
