Danish Citizenship Processing Frozen As Applicants Launch Campaign

Danish citizenship applications remain frozen across the country. This delay directly affects immigrants planning to get Danish citizenship. Processing may not resume until late 2027. Social Democrat spokesperson Katrine Evelyn Jensen shared this estimate with news outlet The Local. Applicants have now launched a public campaign called Citizenship Appeal Denmark. They sent an appeal to parliament and Integration Minister Morten Bødskov.

Denmark has not granted any new citizenships for over a year. The last citizenship bill passed in April 2025. The October 2025 bill was dropped due to Denmark's EU presidency schedule. A spring election delayed the next bill, known as L98, in March. That bill included 2,055 main applicants and about 1,120 children. Those applicants had already met all strict language, employment, and residency rules.

About 14,000 people are now waiting in Denmark's citizenship queue. Some applicants have been waiting for more than three years. Campaign organizers want parliament to resume processing application files fairly. They emphasize that real families and children are behind every application. More than 900 people have signed their online petition so far. For now, foreign residents in Denmark must continue waiting under uncertain rules.
