Danish Citizenship Applications May Be Frozen Until Late 2027

Foreign residents in Denmark face a two-year freeze on citizenship applications. Application processing may not restart until late 2027 at the earliest.

Katrine Evelyn Jensen stated this timeline in an interview with The Local. She is the citizenship spokesperson for the Social Democrats. Jensen expects a new citizenship bill to pass in October 2027. She urged roughly 14,000 people in the application queue to be patient.

The citizenship delay began under the previous Social Democrat government. Parliament shelved the citizenship bill in October 2025. Officials claimed they lacked time during Denmark's presidency of the EU.

Parliament tabled another bill on January 22nd this year. Lawmakers cancelled that bill when elections were called in late February. In March, the Ministry of Immigration suspended processing citizenship files entirely. They paused processing while waiting for clear rules after the election. Long-term foreign residents and families now face a full two-year pause.
