/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Copenhagen has started collecting used diapers in separate waste bins for recycling. City crews began placing bins in residential courtyards and municipal day-care centers on Monday. Previously, diapers went into residual waste and were incinerated. Denmark's first diaper treatment facility will now process the waste.
The city estimates that up to 94 percent of diaper waste can become new materials. Diaper contents and cellulose will become biofiber for energy and district heating. Recycled plastic components will go into products like car interiors. Superabsorbent polymers will serve as binding material in construction.
The bins accept child and adult diapers and incontinence pads. You can also throw in paper cloths and plastic-free wet wipes. Menstrual hygiene products are strictly excluded from these bins. You must tie all diaper waste tightly inside a standard plastic bag.
Single-family houses and allotment gardens can join the system next year. Municipal nursing homes and senior housing will join in February 2027. Copenhagen expects full citywide coverage by 2029.
