Copenhagen public transport ranks among Europe's most expensive

Commuters in Copenhagen are paying significantly more for public transport. A new Greenpeace report ranks Copenhagen as the fourth most expensive capital in Europe.

The study examined 30 European capitals across 27 EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, and Norway. Only Paris, London, and Amsterdam cost more than Copenhagen. Luxembourg City, Tallinn, and Valletta offer free transport.

Copenhagen scored poorly across all evaluation categories. The report checked ticket simplicity, route coverage, and discounts for students and low-income groups.

Local commuter pass prices jumped over three years. A two-zone monthly card rose from 510 kroner in 2023 to 600 kroner in 2026. This equals an increase of 17.6 percent. Three-zone cards rose by 22.4 percent. Four-zone cards increased by 15.3 percent.

Greenpeace Denmark criticized the rising costs. Campaign leader Christian Fromberg called the situation absurd for a green city. Transport accounts for 30 percent of Denmark's emissions. Passenger cars made up 16 percent in 2024, while public transport accounted for only 2 percent. Meanwhile, Oslo and Dublin saw transport prices fall.
