/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Buying a Chinese electric car in Europe may soon become more expensive. China is reducing tax rebates for exporters of new energy vehicles. This policy change could raise retail prices for buyers in Denmark and Sweden.
China's Ministry of Finance and State Taxation Administration announced the decision on October 12, 2026. The value-added tax export rebate rate will fall from 13 percent to 9 percent. This lower rate will take effect on April 1, 2027. The policy applies to both fully electric cars and plug-in hybrids.
Chinese officials want to curb aggressive price competition among domestic car manufacturers. The government also aims to encourage sustainable and brand-driven expansion overseas. Higher export costs may force Chinese automakers to adjust their pricing in Europe.
European consumers could see higher prices for imported Chinese electric vehicles. Alternatively, car manufacturers might accelerate plans to build local European production plants. This report was originally published by Caixin Global.
